MDR REVISITED: Three Sad Accounts and What They Teach
Many have suffered spiritual damage because of the tendency of some in the Lord’s church to obsess over the marriages of others. Consider three examples which have recently come to my attention.

A Christian was going through a divorce. Her mother tried to persuade a preacher to take the daughter’s side. He refused and wisely told her, “An outsider can’t know what went on behind the closed doors of a marriage.” Sensible people know that is true. Paul wrote, “Every fact is to be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses” (2 Cor. 13:1). Even when there are “witnesses,” it is not always possible to determine if they are accurate. Lanier is best known for his key role in launching the Bear Valley School of Preaching, now the Bear Valley Institute of Biblical Studies, where he served as director and dean.1 While there, he influenced students on divorce and remarriage, and most graduates I have met still share his views. He published numerous articles on the subject in Firm Foundation and other papers and wrote a widely circulated tract on the subject.
