Preaching School Pushes Satan’s MDR Doctrine (Divorce and Remarriage in a Few Minutes)

Preaching School Pushes Satan’s MDR Doctrine (Divorce and Remarriage in a Few Minutes)

Marriage, divorce, and remarriage (MDR): teaching error

Following are excerpts a brother, Bill Lewis, wrote in a troubling email:

This doctrine (that is, error on divorce and remarriage) is a major problem in…my area.  Here, where…churches are small and scattered, we rely on…schools of preaching. [A well-known school] has been graduating 50 men every two years since 1965.  Their version of the gospel is to push this agenda, and they are militant…I realize the heads of the schools are not going to admit they are wrong, but the members need to hear another voice, and there isn’t any other being taught.  That is why I am passionate about getting this disseminated. This doctrine was not taught in the church, ever, up until recent years. Now the church is getting to be known by it, as the Mormon church is by polygamy, and it is just as damaging. I am determined to do whatever I can to cry out against it. With my very limited resources and being totally unknown in the brotherhood, I have faith the Lord will be my strength. Lord bless.

GOD DOES NOT AUTHORIZE PREACHERS TO JUDGE MARRIAGES: Ministers Don’t Know All the Facts

GOD DOES NOT AUTHORIZE PREACHERS TO JUDGE MARRIAGES: Ministers Don’t Know All the Facts

A Christian was going through a divorce. Her mother tried to persuade a preacher to take the daughter’s side. He refused and wisely told her, “An outsider can’t know what went on behind the closed doors of a marriage.” Sensible people know that is true. Paul wrote, “Every fact is to be confirmed by the testimony of two or three witnesses” (2 Cor. 13:1). Even when there are “witnesses,” it is not always possible to determine if they are accurate. David wrote, “False witnesses have risen against me” (Ps. 27:12). Proverbs says, “A false witness breaths out lies” (Prov. 14:5, ESV). Preachers who meddle in the marriages of others may take the wrong side and end up justifying the wicked and condemning the righteous, both of which are an abomination to God (Prov. 17:15).

BIZARRE WORDS FROM ROY LANIER SR.

BIZARRE WORDS FROM ROY LANIER SR.

When Biblically informed men with compassion toward the divorced like David Lipscomb, G. C. Brewer, C. R. Nichol, and Foy Wallace Jr. died, the void they left was gradually filled by other whose scholarship lent credibility to their unreasonable views on divorce and remarriage. Like the Pharisees, they forced burdens on others that they, themselves, would likely never have been willing to bear. Roy Lanier Sr., by his writings and influence on the Bear Valley preaching school, promoted error.

ROY LANIER SR. ON DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE

ROY LANIER SR. ON DIVORCE AND REMARRIAGE

Roy Lanier Sr. began serving as chair of the Bible department of Central Christian College, later named Oklahoma Christian College, in 1950, and helped establish York College. Lanier is best known for his key role in launching the Bear Valley School of Preaching, now the Bear Valley Institute of Biblical Studies, where he served as director and dean.1 While there, he influenced students on divorce and remarriage, and most graduates I have met still share his views. He published numerous articles on the subject in Firm Foundation and other papers and wrote a widely circulated tract on the subject.
