Seventh-Day Adventists: Can You Work Your Way to Heaven?

Seventh-Day Adventists: Can You Work Your Way to Heaven?

https://youtu.be/L48kU9NPggw

American history is peppered with nation-wide revivals, often called  “Great Awakenings.”  The first was in 1730. The  next started in 1800, and had an unusually powerful impact. Baptist, Methodist and other established churches still numerically small in the colonies, enjoyed substantial growth. The Second Great Awakening gave rise several movements. One would become  known as the Seventh-day Adventists church.

A Baptist preacher, William Miller planted the seeds of the SDA church by attempting to set the date of Christ’s second coming . He predicted, based on symbolic numbers in highly figurative Bible passages Jesus would come again October 22, 1844.  Crowds waited on a hill for Christ’s second advent. When  the Lord didn’t show, many returned  home humiliated.  October 22 became known as the  “Great Disappointment.”  Of course, the Bible plainly states no human can determine when Jesus will again appear. God’s son said in Matt. 24:36 “But of that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.” Adventism teaches other serious errors. Let’s consider a few.

First, Adventism teaches Christians are subject to the ten commandments.  Yet the Bible says the commandments are not divine  directives for Christians. Jesus’ death replaced Moses’s law with “a  new and living way” (Heb. 10:20). ) Ephesians says, in 2:15 “he abolished… “the Law of commandments contained in ordinances.”

The Galatian church was seduced by false teachers who advocated  tenants of Christianity were secondary to Moses’ Law and Paul condemned them writing they were not only embracing false teaching but by it jeopardizing their souls.  Galatians 1:6-9 says:

I am amazed that you are so quickly deserting Him who called you by the grace of Christ, for a different gospel; which is really  not another…But even though we, or an angel from heaven, should preach to you a gospel contrary to that which we have preached to you, let him be accursed so I say again now, if any man is preaching to you a gospel contrary to that which you received, let him be accursed.

No wonder their 19th century contemporaries  called Adventists “Galationists!” To make Moses’ laws greater than Christ’s is  to subject Jesus to Moses. Galatians 5:4 says, “You have been severed from Christ, you who are seeking to be justified by law; you have fallen from Grace.” Christ is God’s final solution to the problem of sin, and to fail to accept that is to condemn one’s soul. According to 1 John 2:2, “He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.”

Second, like the Biblical Galatians, SDAs don’t accept Moses’s law was only a schoolmaster to prepare Jews for Jesus. They instead adhere to certain  parts of the old law as though Moses’ words express God’s last will for humanity. Paul wrote in Galatians 3:24-26  “…The Law has become our tutor to lead us to Christ, that we may be justified by faith. But now that faith has come, we are no longer under a tutor. For you are all sons of God through faith in Christ Jesus.”

Third, Adventists follow non Biblical Dictates of Ellen G. White. After falling down stairs when still a child, White received a purported revelation exalting the Sabbath.  )White’s written works which SDAs follow contains  as many as 8,000 plagiarisms. Adventists counter White plagiarized only two times   Even if that is an accurate count, she twice stole the intellectual property of others and dishonestly claimed it was original to her.

No credible Bible student has accused the apostles and other inspired New Testament  authors of plagiarism. Even two intellectual property thefts the SDA church admits are red flags Of the man of sin, part of the great apostacy of the early church the Bible says “that is, the one whose  coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders… (2 Thess. 2:9). Pilfering is dishonest and bearing bad fruit. Matthew 12:33 say,  “Either make the tree good and its fruit good, or make the tree bad and its fruit bad; for the tree is known by its fruit. 2 Th. 2:9 “that is, the one whose coming is in accord with the activity of Satan, with all power and signs and false wonders…”

Conclusion

The Bible condemns  Christians who attempt to merit, or earn,  salvation. Ephesians 2:8-10 poses a paradox-sounding statement:

For by grace you have been saved through faith; and that not of yourselves, it is the gift of God; not…of works, that no one should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God. Prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

Christians do not earn  heaven by works, yet Ephesians 2:10 says the nature of the saved is to do to do good works. Considering James 2:20 and 26  in light of Ephesians  clears up misunderstandings: “But are you willing to recognize, you foolish fellow, that faith without works is useless?… For just as the body without the spirit is dead, so also faith without works is dead.”

Humans cannot boast about working their way to heaven because it is impossible. The normal result of salvation is to do good through immense gratitude, love for Christ, and demonstrating our faith. Those motives clarify John 9:4: “We must work the works of Him who sent Me as long as it is day; night is coming when no one can work.”

Jehovah’s Witnesses & the Rejection of the Trinity

Jehovah’s Witnesses & the Rejection of the Trinity

https://youtu.be/Mz8Txy0EwFk

Jehovah’s Witnesses witness for Satan, not Jehovah. They reject God in rejecting the godhead, also known as the divine nature and trinity, a non-biblical term from the late middle ages. God is three non-autonomous persons: the Father, Son and Holy Spirit. On  the Apologetics Press website dated October, 2015 (accessed November 27, 2023), Kyle Butt provided a condensed definition: “…One God in the Bible exists simultaneously in three personalities—the Father, the Son and [the] Holy Spirit—each one partaking of the Divine nature.” JWs on the other hand teach the Father, Jehovah, alone is divine. Jesus was created. The Holy Spirit is a thing—God’s active force.” Let’s take a break to select subscribe, the thumbs up icon and notification bell. That way you support the channel and thank you very much.

Ecclesiastes 1 says “There is nothing new under the sun.” Similar errors arose during  the apostles’ lifetimes, so many passages address JW antichrist errors (1 John 4:3). If the JW’s were a Major League Baseball team, they would quickly strike out.

STRIKE 1: JW’s teach only Jehovah is divine; yet God  describes himself as plural. Genesis. 1:26 declares, “…God said, “Let Us make man in Our image.” The Hebrew Old Testament says  God  is also “Elohim,”  The i and m at the end make it plural. God wanted man to fill the earth.  Genesis  11:7 says, “Let us… confuse their language….”

Strike 2: Jehovah’s Witnesses cite Colossians 1:15 as proof h is created “He is the… the first-born of all creation.” Yet the next verse  says, “For by Him all things were created, both in the heavens and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities…” (Col. 1:16). No book, especially an inspired one, would contradicts  itself in two sentences. Verse 15 cannot mean Christ was created. Jesus could not have been created if he created everything, as the next verse says, Some view the passage saying the first born in a Biblical family had enormous privileges,  and Christ first born has the privilege of creating everything. Others hold  Romans 8:29, which says “the first-born among many brethren…” and  explains verse 15  this way:  Jesus is the first born from the dead meaning he is the first to be  raised never to die again. Thomas touched Jesus and exclaimed, “My Lord and my God” (John 20:28).

According to John 8:58, Jesus’s name is  the same as God’s at the burning bush, “I am.”  John 1:1, 14 says, “In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. The Word became flesh, and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, glory as of the only begotten from the Father, full of grace and truth.”  Philippians. 2:6-7 declares,  “Although He existed in the form of God, he did not regard equality with God a thing to be grasped but emptied Himself, taking the form of a bond-servant….” 1 John1:1 says of Jesus, “…Which we have heard, which we have seen with our eyes, which we have looked upon, and our hands have handled.”

Strike 3:  JW’s teach the Holy Spirit is not  a person.  An article at Watchtower Online is entitled Why the Holy Spirit is Not a Person (accessed November 16, 2023). Isaiah 63:10 says  wayward Israelites “…grieved His Holy Spirit….” Persons, not things,  can be grieved. Matthew 12:32 says “Whoever shall speak against the Holy Spirit, it shall not be forgiven him, either in this age, or in the age to come.” At the last supper Christ promised when he left,  the Spirit would come. John 14:16, 26 says:

The Father…will give you another Helper… that is thee Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not behold Him or know Him…The …Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, HE will teach you all things, and bring to your remembrance all that I said to you.

Things can’t  talk, but the Holy Spirit talks. Acts 8:29 says, “…the Spirit said to Philip, “Go up and join this chariot.” When Ananias lied to the Holy Spirit, he lied to God.  Peter said, “Ananias, why has Satan filled your heart to lie to the Holy Spirit? You have not lied to man but to God” (Acts 5:3-4). When Russell decided  everyone was out of step but him, did he consider he might not understand? Did he consider Isiah 55?

For My thoughts are not your thoughts,

Neither are your ways My ways,” declares the LORD.

“For as the heavens are higher than the earth,

So are My ways higher than your ways,

And My thoughts than your thoughts.

Conclusion

A pyramid originally covered  Charles Taze Russell’s tomb. An online article, What is the Spiritual Meaning of a Pyramid? (updated September 24,2023 says Pyramids “serve as enduring symbols of … self-awareness, transcending…religious boundaries.” JW’s are not Christians.

How Can We Know What Jesus Looked Like?

How Can We Know What Jesus Looked Like?

Isaiah 53:2 predicted Christ “…Has no stately form or majesty that we should look upon Him, nor appearance that we should be attracted to Him.”  Some think this teaches Jesus in the flesh was ugly. Isaiah instead foresees he would not be so irresistibly handsome that others would follow and admire him because of the way he looked.

It is human nature to view the dazzlingly attractive favorably just because they are pleasing to the eyes. A  December 7, 2014  Psychology Today online article, “The Surprising Power of a Beautiful Face,” said:

[Participants] received…envelopes [with] photographs of [three people]… [one], highly attractive, [one] average, and [one] unattractive.  Subjects…determined which person…possessed traits like altruism, stability…and happiness…Participants [concluded]…highly attractive people … were… happier…more successful…better parents [with] better jobs.

Even the Bible takes note of …rare attractiveness. Solomon was “dazzling and ruddy.” (Cant. 5:10).  1 Samuel 16 says David was “ruddy, with beautiful eyes and… [a] handsome appearance.” Esther was “…beautiful of form and face” (Esther 2:7).” God did not want our Savior to draw crowds by good looks, but by his message, good deeds, example and crucifixion. He was likely handsome. After all, he is God’s son, and God gave his best for the intended purpose. He was not one in a million  handsome.

Genevieve Carlton in “What Did Jesus Look Like”? uploaded April 20, 2023 wrote:

.…after…[AD] 400…artists …began depicting Jesus in their own image.  …Ethiopia[n], depictions…had African features… Indian Christians drew Jesus with South Asian [traits]. Europeans…portrayed him as…fair-skinned…” (I add and sometimes with blue eyes-WL)

Now that we understand most depictions of the most painted face in history do not accurately portray Jesus, what did he look like?

First, Luke 19:4-6 may indicate his height was not above average. “Zacchaeus…was trying to see…Jesus…and…was unable because of the crowd, for he was small in stature… He…climbed up…a sycamore tree…to see Him… Jesus looked up and said to him, “Zacchaeus, hurry and come down, for today I must stay at your house.” If Jesus had been tall,  Zacchaeus could have seen him without climbing a tree.  According to Matthew 26, Judas betrayed Christ with a kiss while he was among his disciples in the Garden of Gethsemane—presumably because he was the same height or a little shorter than they were. Others counter since the arrest was at night, darkness influenced  Judas’ need to identify him. The height of men in Palestine in Jesus’s day was between 5″ 1″ and 5′ 5″. Some estimate his height at 5’ 3”—to 5” 5’  or about 1.6 to 1.65 to meters. He was possibly lean yet muscular from a high protein diet that included a lot of fish.

Second, Jesus had short hair like others in Palestine then because of head lice, and he probably trimmed his with a knife. Knives were one of the few tools then and ancients. were very handy with them. Isaiah 50:6 says: “I offered … my cheeks to those who tore out My beard.” Jesus had beard, too, also…trimmed short.

Third, while growing up, Jesus worked with his hands like most men at that time. Peter, James and John, for example, were fishermen, throwing out heavy nets and pulling them in even heavier with fish. Maneuvering small boats, sometimes on rough water. Christ probably weighed about 130 lbs. or 59 kilograms.

Fourth, Jesus was olive-to  dark-complected, brown eyed with brown curly hair like his contemporaries in the region. He looked young because he was young. Luke 3:23  says, “…His ministry began when “he was about thirty years of age…” When crucified 3 ½ years later, Jesus was still in his early 30s.

Fifth, Jesus wore sandals, common footwear of the time and like sandals today. and  may have at times worn a head covering, not unusual with frequent winds and sometimes chilly Palestine weather.

Sixth, Christ had no blemishes or deformities. He was the ultimate sacrifice, and sacrifices could not have imperfections. Isaiah 46 says, “…Provide a lamb… without blemish for a burnt offering to the LORD daily.” John the Baptist, seeing Jesus, proclaimed, “Behold, the Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world!” (John 1:29).

Seventh, Christ embodied charisma. Who could exude more personal magnetism than God in the flesh? Officers sent to arrest Jesus came back empty handed, explaining “Never did a man speak the way this man speaks.” (John 7:46). Jesus radiated masculinity. Many women followed him. Luke 8:2 says,  some women….Mary…Magdalene…Joanna the wife of Chuza, Herod’s steward, and Susanna, and many others…were contributing…their private means.” Even today, glance around your church. You’ll probably see more women than men.

The SDA Church and Foot Washing

The SDA Church and Foot Washing

Foot washing preceded the first communion service. John 13:5-9 says Jesus:

…Poured water into the basin, and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded. He came to Simon Peter. He said to Him, Lord, do You wash my feet? Jesus answered and said to him, What I do you do not realize now, but you shall understand  hereafter. Peter said to Him, Never shall You wash my feet! Jesus answered him,  If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me. Simon Peter said to Him, Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head

Some denominations have at times washed feet. However, Seventh-day Adventists see foot washing as a permanent worship act and every  three months have a foot washing ceremony followed by communion. For three Bible reasons, foot washing has no place in Christian worship. Let’s pause for a moment. Please select subscribe, the thumbs up icon and the notification bell. Thank you for your support.

First, washing feet was necessary in Bible times. Ancients walked on dirt; muddy when wet and dusty when dry. Feet cleansing make them comfortable indoors and kept them from soiling floors and rugs. When God’s son, and not a servant or the disciples themselves, washed their feet, he demonstrated no service, however humble,  is beneath any Christian. Jesus said  “The Son of Man did  not come to be served, but to serve…” (Matt 20:28).

Second, other Bible accounts  indicate feet were washed for both hospitality and practical reasons. Angels appeared like men  to Abraham. The patriarch said  “Please let a little water be brought and wash your feet, and rest yourselves under the tree” (Gen. 18:4). Lot told angels who appeared as men “…my Lords, please turn aside into your servant’s house, and spend the night, and wash your feet; then you may…go on your way” (Gen. 19:2). Abraham sent his chief servant to find a wife for his son  Isaac.  Gen. 24:32 says, “…Then Laban…gave [the servant]…water to wash his feet and the feet of the men…with him.” Judg. 19 records a traveler and his concubine passing through Gibeah. An old man offered hospitality: “He….gave the donkeys fodder, and they washed their feet” (Judges 19:21). While Jesus dined in a Pharisee’s home, a woman washed his feet out of love and  and devotion. Luke 7:38 says, “…she….wet His feet with her tears, and kept wiping them with the hair of her head…kissing His feet, and anointing them.” A poor widow could be supported by the church  “…if she has brought up children, if she has shown hospitality to strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has assisted those in distress, and if she has devoted herself to every good work” (1 Tim. 5:10).

Third, not everything Jesus and his Apostles did established an act of worship. Paul instructed Christians in Rome and elsewhere to greet one another with a holy kiss. Even today in some parts of the world, men kiss men and women kiss women as a greeting, corresponding to handshaking in the Western world.

Early Christians worshipped in the temple. Acts 5:42 says,  “Every day, in the temple and from house to house, they kept right on teaching and preaching Jesus as the Christ.” After Stephen’s death and the accompanying persecution, “….Those who had been scattered went about preaching the word”(Acts 8:4).  Dispersed Christians and their converts worshiped in upper rooms and homes of wealthy believers. Acts 20:8 says,  “There were many lamps in the upper room where we were gathered together.” Paul saluted “…Our sister…and to the church in your house” (Philemon 2). That doesn’t mean we must in homes or upper rooms.

CONCLUSION

The Bible reveals Christians under the direction of inspired apostles engaged in  five acts of worship.  First, saints worshiped by taking communion. Acts 20:7-8 says, “On the first day of the week, when we were gathered  together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to depart the next day, and he prolonged his 1message until midnight. On the first day of the week, when we were gathered  together to break bread, Paul began talking to them, intending to depart the next day…” Second, Christians sang. Eph. 5:19 says, “Speaking to one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing and making melody with your heart to the Lord.” Third, they read scriptures (which is sometimes accomplished in sermons). 1Tim. 4:13 commands, “…Give attention to the public reading of Scripture, to exhortation and teaching.” Fourth, saints worshipped by giving. 1 Cor. 16:2 says, “On the first day of every week let each one of you put aside and save, as he may prosper.” Prayer was a fifth act of worship when the church met. 1Tim. 2:8 commands men to pray, “…lifting up holy hands, without wrath and dissension.” Evidence is overwhelming that although the holy kiss, foot washing by God’s son no less, and assembling in homes of generous, wealthy Christians were wonderful actions. They did not make the cut as divinely ordained acts of worship.

Jehovah’s Witnesses: Wicked Doctrines with a Seamy Start

Jehovah’s Witnesses: Wicked Doctrines with a Seamy Start

The “Bible Student Movement,” small groups in various cities, foreshadowed Jehovah’s Witnesses. A class was begun in the 1876 by successful businessman Charles Taze Russell in Pittsburg. Members elected him their Pastor.  The carefully organized group  focused on denouncing organized religion. Russell collaborated some with Nelson Barbour until 1879, the year Russell published  magazine The Herald of the Morning Dawn now called The Watchtower Announcing Jehovah’s Kingdom. Circulation grew from 6,000 to around 20 million today. Awake! has a similar circulation. Russell incorporated the printing facility,  “Zion’s Watchtower Bible and Tract  Society,” at Pittsburg  in 1884. Before we continue, please select subscribe, the thumbs up icon  and the notification bell. Expenses are covered. We  appreciate your support.

In 1886, the society published a series of seven books. Russell wrote 6. The last was authored after he died by J.  F.  Rutherford, Russell’s lawyer and successor; considered by many co-founder of the movement. Originally entitled The Millennial Dawn, it  is now Studies in the Scriptures. Headquarters were relocated to  Brooklyn, New York. The society steadily acquired real estate  including entire city blocks and soon became a financial empire. It was recently relocated to Upstate New York, and  owns state of the art equipment and facilities. James 3:14 says “bitterness and selfish ambition” war against the truth. Tracking Russell is a tragic trail of scandals. Let’s examine a few.

The first  surrounded Russell’s wife, Maria Frances Ackley, who left him in 1897. She was originally attracted  to Russell’s  teachings, and functioned as unofficial  co-director of “Zion’s Watchtower Bible and Tract Society.” Six years after leaving, she sought legal separation on the grounds of mental cruelty, forced celibacy and cold, indifferent treatment. Ackley was awarded  $6,036 alimony, around $140,000, in 2023 money. The trial spawned investigations of Russell’s religious enterprises, which   were conducted through several subsidiaries, all under a holding company 99.9% of which he controlled.  Russell answered to no one; he received a substantial stream of wealth from a financial megalith successfully organized to hide his assets; thus Ackley’s meager alimony settlement.

Second was “The Miracle Wheat” con.  A March 22, 1911 Brooklyn Eagle article, “Pastor Russell’s Miracle Wheat: Fraud And Deception In Watchtower Roots,”  exposed the con. The  U.S. Department of Agriculture sued Russell  for falsely claiming “Miracle Wheat, ” which he sold for $60 a bushel and $1per pound, far above the price for ordinary wheat at the time By claiming its yield was six times greater than ordinary wheat. USDA research found Russell’s wheat yields were below average; and authorities required him to refund all money.  (Leslie Rumble, Radio Replies, 2:1,352).   In 1911 the Brooklyn Daily Eagle published a caricature of Russell and beneath it this question: “If Pastor Russell can get a dollar a pound for miracle wheat, what could he have gotten for miracle stocks and bonds…?”

In a third scandal, Russel claimed to preach long messages to massive crowds around the world. In February, 1912, The Brooklyn Eagle  published an article, “Pastor Russell’s Imaginary Sermons,” and said  during his world tour, Russell bought newspaper advertising to publish sermons he “delivered” to massive crowds in distant places. Yet he never presented them. Instead, the Eagle wrote of a “typical” so-called presentation, “His first stop after sailing from the Pacific Coast  was Honolulu. Russell bought blocks of advertising space in advance and  published long sermons he supposedly delivered to large crowds.  He published a long sermon he claimed to have presented in Honolulu. According to the  Hawaiian Star, “He was here for a few hours with a Bible students’ committee…but did not make a public address….” Investigations revealed he repeated the sham at other, renown, venues.

Conclusion

Russell coined the phrase, “Millions now living will never die.”  perpetrated other scams, surrounding failed date-setting for the end.

Mark Twain said, “It ain’t the parts  understand in the Bible that bothers me; it’s the parts of the Bible I do understand.” Jehovah’s Witnesses were founded and now continue trying to determined what cannot be determined: the time of the end. Jesus said in Mark 13:32, “But of that day or hour no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but the Father alone.”

Do Demons Possess People Today?

Do Demons Possess People Today?

Chinese religion 3,000 years before Christ saw good and evil as equal, signified by the Yin and Yang symbol. Harmony resulted from the two opposite entities. God is not a white curve baked on half a tile. He is an all-powerful person, far superior to Satan, who would make up far less than the black part of the Yin Yang square. The devil causes continuous conflict. Humanity, the prize, is caught in the middle. Invisible combat, stripped of niceties like Christmas ceasefires, truces, and soldiers with mixed feelings after killing an enemy because  “he was just doing his job” never stops. Ephesians 6:12 declares,  “Our struggle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers…the powers….the world forces of this darkness, against the spiritual forces of wickedness in…heavenly places.” The devil’s ruthless abilities are immeasurable.

Perhaps he was once an arch (or chief) angel, blessed with extraordinary power. Only one struck 185,000 Assyrian soldiers dead (2 Kings 19:35). What clout the evil one must have! On top of that, he is assisted by third of the heavenly host that may have left heaven to join Satan’s rebellion. Revelation 20:4 says, “His tail swept away a third of the stars of heaven, and threw them to the earth…,” explaining the phrase, “the devil and his angels” (Matthew 25:41).  Isaiah 14:14 may describe his literally totally unlimited, boundless ambition: “ I will make myself like the Most  High.” Imagine a human, intelligent, resourceful and leading a large nation who’s crazed by the sole ambition to destroy every person regardless of collateral damage. Please note the pure evil in an angel powerful enough to instantly kill 200,000 soldiers makes him an unimaginable threat. Then add the myriad of co-rebels. Jesus, The Lord contemptuously called him Beelzebub, or “chief of the dunghill.” Fence-straddling is impossible. Matt 24:14 says., “He who does not gather with Me, scatters.
God’s gift his son proves  Satan is a very real threat. Nothing less could have motivated the Father to sacrifice Jesus. The destroyer is not like the image of his dark PR machine: buffoonish, cartoonish; little more than spiritual vaporware. How do Christians join the battle?  God provides a toolkit–the Bible. Let’s take a break. Your support of this channel is appreciated.  Please  select “subscribe,” the “thumbs up” icon and the notification bell. Thank you so much for viewing.

Tool #1 is prayer. Paul was troubled about the Thessalonian church, “for fear…the tempter…tempted you, and our labor should be in vain…we…keep praying most earnestly…” (1 Thessalonians 3:5, 10). In Matthew 6:13, Jesus entreated, “Do not lead us into temptation, but deliver us from evil.” Luke 22:31-32 proves prayer pulverizes the destroyer’s  punitive plans. Jesus knew Peter would thrice deny him; “Satan…demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail…”  Christ’s intervention kept  Cephas’s faith  from  becoming particles, which, like Humpty Dumpty, defied reassembly.

James 4:7 defines the next tool: “Resist the devil and he will flee from you.” When we reject his enticements, Satan leaves. His dark PR machine presents him as buffoonish, cartoonish and little more thank spiritual vaporware. Yet James 1:14-16 says,  “Each one is tempted when he is carried away and enticed by his own lust. When lust has conceived, it gives birth to sin; and when sin is accomplished, it brings forth death.”

Tool #3: Shun seductive situations. Proverbs 5 says, of an adulteress, “ … do not go near the door of her house ” 1 Cor. 15:33) warns, “Bad company corrupts good morals.” Proverbs 22:24-25 says, “Do not associate with a man given to anger…lest you learn his ways…” Believers must be strong enough for necessary contact with the world, such as work. I Corinthians 5:9-10  says, “I wrote you…not to associate with immoral people; I did not… mean with the immoral…of this world…then you would have to go out of the world.” Paul really warned against fellowshipping the godless.

#4 is strength. Eph. 6:10 says,  …Be strong in the Lord….” The enemy is real, yet unseen… saints must…be vigilant and ready for combat. Ephesians  6:13 declares, “Take up the full armor of God, that you may be able to resist in the evil day…stand firm.”

                                                                       Conclusion

I Peter 5:8 says“Be of sober spirit, be on the alert. The devil prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.” He succeeds. Many are called by the gospel to live the Christian life; few endure  until the end (Matt. 22:14.)

What in the World do Adventists Mean by Soul Sleep?

What in the World do Adventists Mean by Soul Sleep?

Imagine, if you chose to lead a wicked life, and the only consequence upon your death is to suffer a split second of torment, then cease to exist, wouldn’t that be comforting? The belief, called Soul Sleep,  is taught by Seventh-day Adventists and Jehovah’s Witnesses, with some variations. Mary Fairchild  wrote  on October 9, 2019 at the Learn Religions site,  “…The moment we die, our spirit and soul …[are with] the Lord. But doesn’t this contradict the doctrine known as Soul Sleep?”  Obviously it does, Mary. An Adventist booklet,  When a Man Dies, declares  on page 13, “Death [isn’t] separation from God…loss of divine favor or a state of …misery… [but] an extinction of life itself.” According to the  2013 Christian Research Journal, Adventists believe the lost, “Are not [aware] of anything until the…resurrection when they are destroyed.”  Let’s take a break. Please select ‘subscribe,’ the “thumbs up “ icon and the notification bell. Thank you very much for your support.

I studied with an Adventist who knew his religion  well. When confronted with Matthew 7:14, “The gate is wide, and the way is broad that leads to destruction, and many are those who enter by it,” he countered  the wicked will be destroyed but “like a television beaten with a hammer; it will never work again.” Let’s dig deeper and consider three ways SDAs misuse  scriptures to support the bizarre doctrine.

First, Adventists mistakenly interpret the poetic passage Ecclesiastes 9:7 literally: “For the… dead do not know anything….” Yet other verses clarify the dead are aware of some earthly things. Jesus tells of a wicked rich man and a righteous beggar who die. The rich man entreats the Lord to send the former beggar  to his siblings “…to…warn them, lest they also come to this …torment”  (Luke 16:27-28). He was aware his brothers were alive and judgment had not yet occurred.  Adventists also stretch Ecclesiastes 12:7: “The dust will return to the earth…, and the spirit will return to God who gave it” to teach souls of sinners stop existing and are only in God’s memory.

Psalm 119:160 says, “The sum of thy word is truth.” All scriptures on a subject must be studied for an accurate conclusion. If soul sleep were true, Paul in Philippians 1:21-24 makes no sense.  “For to me, to live is Christ and to die is gain. If I am to go on living…this will mean fruitful labor… I desire to depart and be with Christ, which is better by far; but it is…necessary for you that I remain in the body” (Phil. 1:21–24).

Second, Adventists reject eternal punishment because, “Is it really just,” some ask, “to be punished forever when he or she has been…evil for a brief time?” Yet,  God’s truth does not come from what we think. Prov. 16:25 says, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is…death.” God is a perfectly fair. Isaiah 30:18 says, “The LORD is a God of justice.” Isaiah 55:9 says, “…My ways higher than your ways….”

Eternal agony awaits transgressors. In Matthew 25:46, goats and sheep represent the disobedient and the dutiful, respectively. Jesus said, “These will go away into eternal punishment, but the righteous into eternal life.” Both “eternals” are from the same Greek word and mean just that. Punishment and reward have the same duration. If hell is a moment of retribution followed by annihilation, heaven is a moment of bliss followed by annihilation. Revelation 14:11 says the smoke of hell’s torment is “for ever and ever.”

Third, “sleep” is often a metaphor for death. Jesus told his closest followers “… Lazarus has fallen asleep…His disciples replied,  Lord, if he sleeps, he will get better. Jesus…told them plainly, Lazarus is dead” (John 11:11–14). Failure to grasp the often symbolic use of the word sleep has led to grievous error.

Conclusion

Everlasting agony awaits heaven’s antagonists. 2 Thessalonians 1: 7-9 says, “…Jesus shall be revealed from heaven with His mighty angels in flaming fire, dealing out retribution to those who do not know God and…who do not obey the gospel of our Lord Jesus…These will pay the penalty of eternal destruction, away from the presence of the Lord and from the glory of His power.”

Is Psychology Supported in the Bible?

Is Psychology Supported in the Bible?

The Bible and modern psychology often clash. Peggy Klubnik in an article, “A comparison of Psychology with Biblical Christianity” at the  Biblical Resources website wrote,

Psychology is not…theology, yet it attempts to define…God and man. God is denied and man is perceived as basically good….Therefore, there is no need for judgment or atonement of sin.  Christ’s death for sinful man becomes meaningless and unnecessary.

Consider 5 differences:

     1. Matthew 7 says “A bad tree bears bad fruit.: Psychology’s fruit is from the terrible tree of its formative thinkers. Atheist Sigmund Freud, considered by many the  discipline’s founder, had an intimate relationship with his younger sister-in-law that may have started when she was 17. Freud’s wife and mother of their eight children weren’t enough for him. Is it not surprising  given his lack of moral purity he interpreted much behavior through the filter of sex? Titus 1:15 warns, “To the pure, all things are pure; but to those who are defiled and unbelieving, nothing is pure, but both their mind and their conscience are defiled.” Freud’s Future of an Illusion was required reading in college. My copy is the illustration.  The illusion is God. Atheist B F Skinner coined “Positive Reinforcement,” and revived “Behaviorism,” which was originated by atheist philosopher Jeremy Bentham. Behaviorism advocates humans are programmed by their environments without souls or freewill.

Carl Jung rejected his religious upbringing first for psychology and later the occult. He believed faith in God might result from pressure to confirm or deny natural instincts (like fornication), and religious convictions may cause neuroses. Yet Titus 2:12 commands, “Deny…worldly desires…” Is it surprising Jung had affairs with some patients?

     2. Much psychology, to paraphrase Ephesians 4:14 is blown by “every wind” of  societal change. On the other hand, “The word of our God stands forever” (Isaiah 40:8). As the  Psychology’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual, or DSM, came in use, psychology began to view drunkenness as the cause of  the disorder (or sickness) of alcoholism. Before she caved to modern trends, Ann Landers famously wrote if Alcoholism is a disease, it’s the only one people give to themselves. God declares intoxication is sinful …“do not get drunk with wine, for that is debauchery” (Eph. 5:18).

3.According to the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual obsession–compulsive behavior a disorder. Yet counselors admit, “Compulsives rule the world.” Disorders to some are motivations to others. President Bill Clinton said, “I am obsessed with my job.” Elon Musk works 120 hour weeks.Let’s take a break. Please choose subscribe, the thumbs up icon and the notification bell.      A friend read about Cognitive Behavior Therapy and thought it presented a Biblical approach to thought mastery, in harmony with Philippians 4:4:  “Whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is any excellence and if anything worthy of praise, let your mind dwell on these things.”  He then saw a CBT counselor, who said, “You must get the “oughts” and “ought nots” out of your vocabulary.” My friend responded, “You are saying I ought not say “ought not?” and later compared the therapist’s reaction to that of a deer in the headlights.

     4. Numerous therapists believe God-like behavior is wrong. A patient was told if he didn’t change his thinking, he would actually  get angry. But  God who created us in his image  is angered and commands us to be. Ephesians 4:26 says, “BE ANGRY, AND yet DO NOT SIN.” All sincere believers will be angered by certain conduct. Ecclesiastes 7:7 says “Oppression makes a wise man mad.”

     5. Most psychologists say we choose our emotions. No one can provoke us or “push our buttons.” Yet God was provoked by the Israelites Deuteronomy. 4:25 says, “You …do that which is evil in the sight of the LORD your God so as to provoke Him to anger.” Likewise, counselors teach we choose  to be sad. Yet others can cause us grief, just like they did God, who was deeply saddened  by Israel’s sins during their desert wanderings (Ps 78:40).

Conclusion

The bedrock difference is psychology bases its behavior standards on troubled individuals and says, “Don’t be like these people.” Christianity holds up a perfect man and says, “Be like Jesus.”  Hebrews 2:10 says,  “For it became him…to make the captain of their salvation perfect through sufferings.”

Beware of the Ultimate Gaslighter

Beware of the Ultimate Gaslighter

Satan has gaslighted supposedly great scholars into believing he isn’t real. An article at the website Bible History Daily, said, “From…comical cartoons to…grotesque…gargoyles, most… today can immediately recognize an image of the devil…In the Hebrew Bible, YHWH’s greatest enemies are not fallen angels commanding armies of demons…but…human beings.” Effective lies contain particles of truth and this statement is partly true. Humans do evil but only because of Satan’s influence.

Non-Christians can be destroyed by one iniquity, and Satan is so effective he has led everyone to sin.  He has batted 1,000 and  bowled 300, according to Romans 3:23, “For all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God.”  Back to the online article, “Is this horned, red-skinned monster with a pitchfork…truly the great enemy of God envisioned by the writers of the Biblical texts? The short answer: no, not really.”

Popular theologian NT Wright, in Jesus and the Victory of God, writes  “’Satan’” refers to the “dark power known in some Old Testament traditions as…the accuser.” He adds in a footnote,  “… I prefer…“the satan,” retaining…Biblical ambiguity as to the ‘personhood’ of this figure.” Others who should know better see Satan only as a personification of evil, not a living  being, much as a hurricane was personified by calling it Katrina. The  Bible says the devil is personal, active, and determined to destroy mankind.

God created Adam and Even in the unsullied Garden of Eden. The evil one, appeared as a serpent and soon changed that pristine beginning into a place of death, sickness, pain,  thorns, thistles and sweatshop labor. Only 1,500 words into the Bible, the Devil deceived the first humans. One hundred words after her creation, he convinced the first woman that when she ate from the tree of the knowledge of good and evil, she would become wise and God didn’t want the competition, thus giving birth to the lie. Jesus would later call Satan “the father of lies” (John 8:44). The devil influenced Eve to lure Adam into evil. The Old Testament has 622,771 words; the entire Bible 807,361. Satan appears in the first 400 words.

A principle of evil could not tempt God’s son, nor would Jesus debate  a symbol. Jesus deflected Satan by talking to him. Matt. 4:1-10 declares:

Jesus was led… by the Spirit… to be tempted by the devil. After He had fasted forty days and forty nights, He…became hungry. And the tempter…said…If You are the Son of God, command that these stones become bread.” But He answered…it is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE ON BREAD ALONE, BUT ON EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS OUT OF THE MOUTH OF GOD.’  Then the devil…had Him stand on the pinnacle of the temple, and said… If You are the Son of God throw Yourself down; for it is written, HE WILL GIVE HIS ANGELS CHARGE CONCERNING YOU; And ON their HANDS THEY WILL BEAR YOU UP, LEST YOU STRIKE YOUR FOOT AGAINST A STONE. Jesus said to him, “On the other hand, it is written, YOU SHALL NOT PUT THE LORD YOUR GOD TO THE TEST. Again, the devil took Him to a…high mountain, and showed Him all the kingdoms of the world…and…said to Him, All these things will I give You, if You fall down and worship me. Then Jesus said to him,  “Begone, Satan! For it is written, YOU SHALL WORSHIP THE LORD YOUR GOD, AND SERVE HIM ONLY.

James 1:15-16 says, “When sin is accomplished, it brings forth death. Do not be deceived, my beloved brethren.” 1 John 5:19 declares, “…The whole world lies in the power of the evil one.”

Conclusion

2 Corinthians 11:14 says,   “…Satan disguises himself as an angel of light.” He has convinced  some of the most brilliant among us  believing made sense for the uninformed of the first century, but not for the sophisticated of our day. 1 Peter 5:8 warns, “Be  of sober spirit, be on the alert. Your adversary, the devil, prowls about like a roaring lion, seeking someone to devour.”
